![]() ![]() Many reasons could be a cause for this trend, nucleus family seems to be the main culprit. This is because people have started thinking more about oneself without caring about what the other person feels. In the same context, there is another disturbing trend which is evolving in our system today which is greediness for instant fame (and selfies). In fact no matter how much money is there in your bank deposit, you will never feel safe. In addition, money is never guaranteed - you might have plenty now, but who knows if you’ll have any in the future? Naturally, all people become greedy for money - some more, others less. But money, as every economist knows, is never enough for any living person. Without money, we cannot survive, since our whole economic system is based on money. Now replace the word WATER with MONEY and this sentences would still make sense. This means that whenever something is not in abundance, we become greedy for it, especially if that something is of crucial importance to our survival. Greed therefore is the result of scarcity. ![]() When water is available to everyone at any time, you never see people greedy for water. When they want to use water, they just do so without second thought. When people feel thirsty, they drink water. But no matter how much they would collect, they would never feel completely secure, because how can one know for sure how much water is enough for a lifetime?įortunately water is abundant in almost all the places except the rivers in Tamil Nadu. ![]() People would fight against one another to collect water for themselves. Since water is a basic need for our survival, it seems that everyone would rush out to collect as much water as they could. In order to understand the cause of monetary greed, let us do a thought experiment: Imagine that water in our planet becomes scares. This leads us to understand what makes people greedy for money? So why has everyone started to link money to every action? Mostly people say it is not cost effective now-a-days to do the same. Today it is difficult to even to find an empty pot. I think you can all remember earthen pots filled with buttermilk kept outside every house during summer for all the passerby in the area and refilled judiciously. Yes, in small cups and with the pure intention that they do not stay more than 30 mins after drinking it. I still remember that every house used to give a big tumbler of coffee to anyone who visits their house. In the 70s and 80s I feel that the degree of greed for money was little and there were more social and interpersonal relationship than at present. I am not claiming that 30 years back there was no greed at all. Let me take you back 25-30 years back where I think it was better. Some of the business practices and enterprises are working based on the principle that their advantage primarily comes from the disadvantages of another. Today's people in business have very little concern or welfare of competitors, or interest in social responsibilities. Moving to the business segment, it is the place which is badly hurt. There is a definite trend today to push time management into the foreground, demanding that we should all be economical with our time and labor. This looks good in theory but what we see if practice is that in the name of implementing time management many of them try and dump heavy loads of effort to others and try to gain just the rewards of that work. I am here referring to be economical with our time or effort spent on doing something productive. Under some circumstances, hoarding or rationing can actually be a valuable asset. This is also done just to bolster one's self-esteem and not to look like a miser in the eyes of the society. The best the average person does is to veil it, or hide it behind exaggerated generosity, which amounts to nothing more than giving of alms, or donating to a needy orphanage. And this trend is growing alarmingly in the present generation. Almost all of us display one of the above mentioned traits in which greed is the most popular one. ![]()
